Physiotherapist immigration guide — 2026/27

Physiotherapy has become one of the most internationally sought-after allied health professions, with all four major immigration destinations reporting shortages in musculoskeletal, neurological, paediatric and sports physiotherapy. The profession attracts applicants from across South Asia, South-East Asia, Africa and Europe who hold strong clinical training and are seeking pathways to stable, well-paid roles abroad. While core clinical skills are transferable, each country requires formal registration with its physiotherapy regulatory body — and the assessment process for overseas physiotherapists involves competency examinations and, in some cases, supervised practice periods before full registration is granted.

The UK's Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registers physiotherapists. Overseas physiotherapists who cannot demonstrate an equivalent qualification to UK standards must apply through the HCPC's International Applications route — which involves a threshold review and potentially a Test of Competence (ToC) including a Computer Based Test and OSCE. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and NHS employers actively recruit internationally, particularly in community rehabilitation, MSK outpatient and inpatient neurorehabilitation settings. The Health and Care Worker Visa applies to NHS-employed physiotherapists, offering reduced fees and IHS exemption.

Canada's physiotherapists must register with the relevant provincial regulatory college — CPTBC in BC, CPO in Ontario, ACPTA in Alberta. The Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE), administered by CAPR (Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators), is mandatory for most internationally educated physiotherapists. The PCE involves a written component and a clinical skills exam. After passing, registration with the provincial college completes the process. Physiotherapy falls under NOC 31202, a TEER 1 occupation eligible for Express Entry. Canada has specific demand in rural and remote communities, where internationally trained PTs with strong generalist skills are especially valued.

Australia's physiotherapists are registered through AHPRA (Physiotherapy Board). An assessment is first conducted by the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC), comparing overseas training against APRC accreditation standards — mandatory before a visa skills assessment can be lodged. Australia's ageing population and private practice growth have driven strong demand in metropolitan and regional settings. Germany's recognition pathway for physiotherapists (Physiotherapeut) involves state-level Berufszulassung, with most non-EU applicants needing a credential review by the relevant Bezirksregierung. German language proficiency at C1 level is the practical standard for patient-facing physiotherapy roles.
