Dentist immigration guide — 2026/27

Dentistry is one of the most heavily regulated healthcare professions when it comes to immigration — each country requires overseas dentists to demonstrate competence through comprehensive licensing exams or equivalence assessments before they can practice independently. The effort is well worth it: dentists command some of the highest salaries in the professional healthcare sector, and shortages of NHS/public dentists in the UK, rural dentists in Canada and Australia, and dental specialists across all four countries mean that international dental graduates (IDGs) are actively pursued by healthcare employers and immigration systems alike.

The UK's General Dental Council (GDC) assesses overseas dentists through the Overseas Registration Examination (ORE), a two-part examination covering dental science and clinical dentistry. Dentists from countries with GDC-approved qualifications can apply for recognition without the full ORE. NHS dental practices across the UK face chronic vacancies — particularly in rural England, Wales and Scotland — making sponsorship relatively accessible for licensed dentists. Under the Skilled Worker Visa, dentists' going rates are typically above the £38,700 general threshold. Major dental groups and corporate dental providers such as IDH Dental and Portman Dental actively sponsor internationally trained dentists.

Canada's dental registration process is provincially governed. The NDEB (National Dental Examining Board of Canada) administers the assessment pathway for internationally trained dentists (ITDs) — the process includes a Competency Assessment, Written Examination, OSCE and Clinical Examination. The full Canadian pathway typically takes 18–36 months from beginning to end. Dentists in Canada fall under NOC 31110 and are eligible for Express Entry under the FSW stream. Rural and remote dental shortage areas exist across all provinces, and some provinces nominate dentists through PNP streams to address these shortfalls.

Australia's Dental Board (AHPRA) and the Australian Dental Council (ADC) jointly administer the overseas dentist assessment process — including an Initial Assessment, written exam and Practical Assessment. Alternative direct registration pathways exist for dentists who have graduated from dental schools in Australia or New Zealand, or who have completed specialist training equivalent to an Australian fellowship. Germany's Zahnarzt (dentist) registration requires Approbation from the Landeszahnärztekammer — overseas dentists from non-recognised countries typically need to pass the Kenntnisprüfung (knowledge test) and demonstrate German at B2–C1 level. German cities, particularly in rural areas, are actively addressing dentist shortages through international recruitment.
