Teachers are among the most internationally mobile professionals in education, and internationally qualified teachers are in high demand across the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany, each of which faces varying degrees of classroom shortages in core subjects. Whether you teach maths, science, languages, special educational needs or early childhood education, there is a structured immigration pathway available. However, the route from overseas qualification to classroom practice varies dramatically by country: the UK requires Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), Australia requires state-based registration, Canada requires provincial college of education membership, and Germany requires detailed credential recognition by the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK).

The United Kingdom is experiencing one of its most significant teacher shortages in decades, particularly in secondary schools teaching maths, physics, chemistry, computer science, languages and SEND. For international teachers, the primary pathway is the Skilled Worker Visa using Teacher SOC codes (2314–2315). Overseas-trained teachers can apply for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through the International QTS assessment framework — a route introduced in 2023 that removed the previous two-year teaching requirement. Teachers from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Gibraltar and Singapore can apply through an accelerated QTS recognition route. Salary thresholds depend on pay scale position but generally exceed the Skilled Worker minimum.

Australia's teacher immigration is shaped by state-based registration bodies: VIT in Victoria, NESA in NSW, QCT in Queensland and TRBWA in Western Australia. Before applying for a points-tested visa, teachers typically need a skills assessment from AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership), which evaluates overseas teaching qualifications against Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. State nomination under Subclass 190 is common for teachers, as states with high demand add bonus points or nominate teachers directly. Subject specialisation matters significantly: maths, science, agricultural sciences and languages attract higher priority across most states.

Germany has the most bureaucratic teacher recognition pathway of the four countries, but also offers outstanding job security and remuneration. Teachers (Lehrer) in public schools are typically civil servants (Beamte), meaning permanent employment and strong pension contributions. The KMK Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen (ZAB) assesses overseas teaching qualifications, and the process can take 6–12 months. German language proficiency at C1 level is typically required for classroom practice. Private and international schools have more flexibility and may hire English-speaking teachers directly, providing an entry point while you develop German language skills over time.
