Social Worker immigration guide — 2026/27

Social work is an essential pillar of public services in the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany, and all four countries face significant shortages of qualified social workers — particularly in child protection, elderly care, mental health and community services. Internationally qualified social workers represent a vital pipeline of talent, though the registration and recognition process is among the most thorough of any profession. Each country's social work regulator assesses not only academic credentials but also values, ethics, professional practice and fitness to practise — reflecting the responsibility placed on social workers who serve the most vulnerable members of society.

In the United Kingdom, social workers must be registered with Social Work England (in England), the Care Council for Wales, SSSC (Scotland) or NISCC (Northern Ireland). Overseas social workers who did not train in the UK typically need to complete a period of supervised practice before registration is granted. The Skilled Worker Visa applies — and local authorities, NHS trusts and independent social care providers all have active international recruitment pipelines. Children's Services (Safeguarding) and Adults Services (mental health, learning disabilities) are both experiencing acute shortages. The BASW (British Association of Social Workers) supports internationally trained social workers through the registration process.

Canada's social workers (NOC 41300) are regulated at the provincial level. Each province has its own college of social work — OCSWSSW in Ontario, BCCSW in BC — and internationally educated social workers must have their credentials assessed by the provincial body before registration. Many provinces offer bridging programmes that help overseas-trained social workers meet local practice standards. Social work in Canada addresses child welfare, mental health support, housing instability, Indigenous services and newcomer integration — all areas of significant policy priority. The FSW Express Entry stream is the most common immigration pathway under NOC 41300 (TEER 1).

Australia's social workers are registered through AASW (Australian Association of Social Workers), which assesses overseas qualifications through a formal eligibility process. Social work appears on state skills shortage lists across multiple states and territories. Australia's child protection and family services systems have significant demand for experienced social workers with international practice backgrounds. Germany's Sozialarbeiter and Sozialpädagoge roles have experienced growing vacancy rates driven by population ageing, mental health demand and refugee integration services. Non-EU social workers applying to Germany need their qualification recognised by the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) and typically require German language proficiency at B2–C1 level for client-facing roles.
