Plumber — Visa Route Comparison
Qualified plumbers installing and maintaining water, gas and drainage systems. Use the guide and comparison below to understand which country offers the best visa route for plumbers in 2026/27.
Plumber immigration guide — 2026/27
Plumbers are among the most chronically under-supplied skilled tradespeople across all four immigration destinations. The combination of ageing apprentice cohorts, growing construction pipelines and the increasing complexity of modern plumbing systems — underfloor heating, heat pump installations, hydronic heating and solar thermal — has created persistent shortages that cannot be filled from domestic supply alone. While plumbing immigration comes with the added challenge of trade qualification recognition, the payoff is excellent: skilled plumbers command strong wages and have among the highest rates of employment stability in any occupation across all four markets.
In the United Kingdom, plumbers are eligible for the Skilled Worker Visa under SOC code 5312 (Plumbers, heating and ventilating engineers). The Immigration Salary List (ISL) is particularly relevant for trades — going rates for plumbers may fall below the general £38,700 threshold, and an ISL listing allows a 20% discount. CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering) is the main professional body, and Gas Safe registration is mandatory for any work involving gas appliances. The UK's net zero heat pump installation programme — targeting 600,000 installations per year — is creating specific demand for plumbers with F-Gas certification and underfloor heating experience.
Canada's construction and trades sector has been booming, driven by federal housing targets. Plumbers fall under NOC 72301 — a TEER 2 occupation qualifying for the Federal Skilled Trades (FST) stream of Express Entry. The FST stream does not require a bachelor's degree, making it specifically designed for tradespeople. It requires at least two years of full-time qualifying trade experience, a valid job offer or provincial certificate of qualification, and meeting language thresholds. Provincial Nominee Programmes are particularly active for plumbers — Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have all run targeted trades draws. The Red Seal Programme allows interprovincial recognition of trade credentials.
Australia's licensing for plumbers is state-based: VBA in Victoria, Fair Trading NSW in New South Wales, QBCC in Queensland. TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) assesses overseas plumbing qualifications for visa purposes. The Subclass 482 employer-sponsored visa is the most common initial route, with plumbers typically working towards Subclass 186 or points-tested pathway after gaining Australian experience. Germany's plumbing sector is governed by the Handwerkskammer — the SHK (Sanitär-, Heizungs- und Klimatechnik) trade qualification is the key recognition pathway, and the German government has been actively processing recognition applications from non-EU plumbers under the Skilled Immigration Act provisions.
