Mechanical Engineer immigration guide — 2026/27

Mechanical engineering is one of the world's oldest and most broadly applicable engineering disciplines, and the breadth of industries that require mechanical engineers — automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, HVAC, oil and gas, medical devices — creates immigration demand across the full spectrum of the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany's economies. While the digital transformation of manufacturing (Industry 4.0) has reshaped the mechanical engineer skill set to include CAD/CAM, FEA and additive manufacturing, the fundamentals of thermodynamics, materials science and mechanical design remain universally valued.

In the United Kingdom, mechanical engineers (SOC 2122) are eligible for the Skilled Worker Visa. IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) membership at AMIMechE or MIMechE (CEng) level adds professional credibility. Major UK mechanical engineering employers including Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Dyson, GKN Aerospace and a vast supply chain of aerospace, defence and energy companies regularly sponsor international mechanical engineers. Specific demand exists for thermodynamic modelling engineers, structural FEA specialists and engineers experienced with ASME or BS EN pressure vessel standards. The UK offshore wind sector has created additional demand for marine and offshore mechanical engineers.

Canada's mechanical engineers (NOC 21301) are TEER 1 and eligible for Express Entry. Engineers Canada and its provincial bodies govern P.Eng. licensing. The automotive sector (Ontario), oil and gas (Alberta), and aerospace and defence (Quebec, Ontario) are the primary mechanical engineering employment clusters. Calgary's energy sector regularly recruits mechanical engineers with rotating equipment, pipeline and process plant experience. The P.Eng. process typically takes two to four years from arrival to completion, including IEQB assessment, technical exam and experience verification.

Australia's mechanical engineers (ANZSCO 233512) are assessed by Engineers Australia via the CDR process — a selective assessment where well-crafted career episodes are essential. States with major resources, energy and infrastructure programmes — Western Australia, Queensland and NSW — actively nominate mechanical engineers. Germany's mechanical engineering (Maschinenbau) sector is world-renowned — companies including Siemens, BASF, ThyssenKrupp, Bosch and a dense ecosystem of Mittelstand engineering firms create exceptional demand. The EU Blue Card applies at the standard €48,400 threshold, with recognised mechanical engineering degrees from most countries accepted.
